Managing FMEAs

Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a methodology designed to identify potential failure modes for a product or process, to assess the risk associated with those failure modes, to rank the issues in terms of importance and to identify and carry out corrective actions to address the most serious concerns.

To access the FMEAs page, click FMEAs in the header bar. This landing page shows a list of all FMEAs in a grid that you can sort, group and filter to find the analysis of interest to you. If you are a member of either the "fmea-editor" group or the "fmea-admin" group then you can create, edit and delete FMEAs. If you are a member of the "fmea-viewer" group then you can only open and view FMEAs.

Add or import an FMEA

  1. To add an FMEA, on the FMEAs page, click the New FMEA icon.

  1. Select the FMEA type from the list of the FMEA types available in your site.
  2. Enter the Focus element that will be the identifier for the FMEA on the FMEAs page and in the FMEA editor page. For the Segment and BOM values, if you choose to specify them, for each value you can either pick from an alphabetized list of unique values from other FMEAs or you can enter a new value.
  3. Click Create. This will open a new FMEA where you can begin adding and editing records.
  4. Enter the first function, then continue to add the other records. You can use either the Worksheet view or the Tree view when entering records.

You can also import an FMEA.

Open an FMEA

To open an FMEA, on the FMEAs page, double-click the FMEA.

Delete an FMEA

To delete an entire FMEA, on the FMEAs page, click the FMEA then click the Delete icon. This deletes the FMEA and all of its records. It cannot be undone.

Sort and filter the grid

Use the columns at the top of the page to order the information as you need to.

  • Sorting by one column is the default behavior. To sort by multiple columns, press SHIFT while clicking another column's sort icon. For example, to display the records sorted first by segment and then by BOM:

    • Click the sort icon in the "Segment" column to make that the primary sort.

    • Then press SHIFT and click the sort icon in the "BOM" column to make that the secondary sort.

  • In this case, the FMEAs will be sorted first by segments and then by the BOMs within each segment.

To restore the default configuration, click the Restore defaults icon in the toolbar above the grid. Note that if your web browser is configured to clear data upon closing the window, you will also see the grid's default configuration whenever you reopen the browser. If not, you will continue to see the modified configuration until you click the icon.

Note that the timestamp columns show only the date, but sorting is based on the full timestamps that are visible upon hovering over each cell. Timestamp columns may be useful for a primary sort but may not be useful as a secondary sort because it is unlikely that multiple FMEAs will have the exact same date and time.
