Importing FMEAs

If you are a member either of the "fmea-editor" group or the "fmea-admin" group, then you can import existing FMEAs from Excel. Initially, there are several built-in import types, each configured for a specific type of source file.

Note: While working in an FMEA, you can download the FMEA worksheet view and header records to an Excel file if desired.

Import an existing FMEA

  1. On the FMEAs landing page click the Import FMEA icon:

  1. Select the FMEA type from the list of the FMEA types available in your site.
  2. Enter at least the Focus element that will identify the FMEA throughout the site. For the Segment and BOM values, if you choose to specify them, for each value you can either pick from an alphabetized list of unique values from other FMEAs or you can enter a new value.
  3. Select the Import type from the list of available options, each configured for a specific type of source file.
  4. Select the Sheet position which specifies which sheet to import the data from.
  5. Select the Starting row that contains the first row of data you want to import. For example, if the first 4 rows of the Excel sheet contain the FMEA's header, the next 2 rows contain the column headings and the next row contains the first function, then enter 7 as the starting row.
  6. Browse for, or drag-and-drop, the file to import data from.
  7. Click Import.

Import types

Initially, the import types are pre-configured to fit typical FMEA worksheet formats so that you can choose the option that is the closest fit for the FMEAs you wish to import. In some cases, you may need to move columns in your Excel sheet to fit the configured column mappings for the selected import type. For example, if using the "J1739 (2021) design" import type, functions must be in Column A, actions must be in column M, and so on.

Basic types:

These import types are compatible with the typical commercial FMEA standards or generic to import any supported field. You can open the attached Excel file to see examples for each of these types: (Examples_for_preconfigured_import_types.xlsx)

  1. Classic auto: Typical format from classical auto/commercial standards such as AIAG-4 and J1739 (2009). This type assumes a) no requirements, b) non-grouped effects, c) 2-column controls and d) 1-column actions.
  2. Classic auto w/requirements: Typical format from classical auto/commercial standards such as AIAG-4 and J1739 (2009) with a separate column for requirements.
  3. J1739 (2021) design: Typical format for design FMEAs per J1739 (2021).
  4. J1739 (2021) process: Typical format for process FMEAs per J1739 (2021).
  5. AIAG-VDA1 design: Typical format for design FMEAs per AIAG-VDA1.
  6. AIAG-VDA1 process: Typical format for process FMEAs per AIAG-VDA1.
  7. All supported fields: For FMEAs with any or all of the fields supported in ReliaSoft Cloud. This type assumes a) non-grouped effects, b) 2-column controls and c) 1-column actions.
  8. All supported fields - grouped effects: For FMEAs with any or all of the fields supported in ReliaSoft Cloud. This type assumes a) grouped effects, b) 2-column controls and c) 1-column actions.

Import/export templates shipped with XFMEA:

These import types are compatible with a commonly used import/export template shipped with XFMEA.

  1. XFMEA - grouped effects: For FMEAs exported from an XFMEA project with an FMEA Structure of Grouped Effects and Causes using the 'J1739 (2008)' import/export template. (This was originally called "J1739 (2008) - Grouped".)
  2. XFMEA - effects before causes: For FMEAs exported from an XFMEA project with an FMEA Structure of Effects Before Causes using XFMEA's 'J1739 (2008)' import/export template. (This was originally called "Porto FMEAs".)

Custom import types:

Upon request, we can add customized types to meet specialized requirements. These are available at the bottom of the list.

Please contact ReliaSoft Support with example(s) of the file(s) you need to import. Column headings without proprietary data are sufficient for this purpose.
